The acid-fueled, hippie-run bus of ‘Electric Kool-Aid’ fame has emerged from our psychedelic legends and is back on the road, helmed by Kesey’s son Zane.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is a 1968 nonfiction book by Tom Wolfe. The book is a popular example of the New Journalism literary style. Wolfe presents a firsthand account of the experiences of Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters, who traveled across the US in a colorfully painted school bus, the Furthur, whose name was painted on the destination sign, indicating the general ethos of Ken Kesey contained multitudes. The acid test parties began after Kesey’s experience with mind-altering drugs as a volunteer test subject for Army experiments in 1960 (later revealed to be part of the CIA’s mind control experiment, Project MKUltra).
A few things that we need to get straight about Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests—they were the distillation of the entire movement both good and bad and they gave The Grateful Dead their chance to connect, perhaps on a higher plane, with a new group which would become their devout audience, their Deadheads. The Acid Test weren’t all about music though.
